Qualifying stages for the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa have been completed and 23 teams have already booked their places although the final 9 spots will not be determined until the 18th November to find who will be using the new Adidas OMB football for the Finals.
Adidas have been the supplier for all World Cup Finals since 1970 and the identity of the new official match ball for the Finals in South Africa is a closely guarded secret until it is unveiled on 4th December at the FIFA draw in Cape Town. All images and technical specifications have not been released by Adidas and, as usual, they will announced to the worlds press in Cape Town when the hugely anticipated draw for next summers finals is announced.
Adidas first started being the official World Cup Finals ball supplier in 1970,the first tournament after England's memorable 1966 Wembley triumph against the West Germans, when the Adidas Telstar football was introduced for the Finals in Mexico.
In Germany in 1974 there were two different balls used in the finals, the Adidas Chile Durlast which was an all white model and the Adidas Telstar Durlast which was a more traditional Adidas Black/White panelled ball.Argentina 1978 saw the first of the Adidas Tango footballs when the Tango Durlast was used and this was followed in 1982 when Adidas launched the Tango Espana for the finals tournament.
Adidas continued to be the official match ball supplier for the finals in 1986 when the Adidas Azteca was unveiled.Italia 90 saw the Adidas Etrusco Unico used and this was followed by the Adidas Questra official match football for the USA 1994 finals.
France 98 had the Adidas Tricolore ball featuring French national colours and in 2002 in Japan and Korea the Fevernova was introduced.Since Adidas started producing the official match football for the World Cup Finals in 1970 all of the balls had been designed with a basic white matchball theme.
This all changed for the 2006 final in Germany when Adidas unveiled the new official match football for the 2006 World Cup called the Adidas Teamgeist. The ball that was used in the final between Italy and France on 5th July 2006 was a mix between silver and gold and was very distinctive.
The new as of yet unamed Official Match Ball for the 2010 World Cup from Adidas will be available from early December from leading online football specialist JUST SOCCA.
