Pre-Season with Derby County

Robbie Savage - Derby County Training

Pre season training at 35 doesn’t get any easier!!

We are down at Loughborough University for the first week of the Derby County pre season programme and we are definitely being put to the test.

Today’s grueling regime involves weights in the gym followed by the following on the track:

  • 8 x 300m
  • 16 x 100m

Then we are in the pool for swimming and recovery.

All of that equals a very bad day for someone who is weak, slow and can’t swim – i.e. Robbie Savage.

Last year in the pool I nearly drowned trying to push a brick along the bottom for one of the exercises – not ideal.

It is great to be back with the Derby boys and we are all looking forward to the new season.  The banter has been flying around all week, when we have been able to get our breath back anyway.

Holland for the World Cup!

We will all be watching the World Cup semi finals together on Tuesday and Wednesday night.  I have backed Holland all the way through and they seem to be getting better and better.

I am going for a Spain versus Holland final despite the form that Germany are in at the moment.

The four teams left in the competition have played some scintillating stuff but in general I haven’t been impressed by the standard of football at this World Cup.

In fact I would go so far as to say that it is probably the worst tournament I have seen.  So many teams, including the normally fluent Portugal, have been happy to sit back, defend and shut up shop making for some very dull games.

The World Cup always sets the trend the following domestic season and I think we will see a lot of teams adopting formations away from the traditional 4-4-2.

Creative players will be dropped into the hole and fewer teams will play with out and out wingers.  England were rigid in their approach and this may just help to improve their adaptability.

My body could be pretty rigid after week one of pre season but it is great to be back and roll on Leeds away first game of the season.
