So, how did England’s World Cup campaign go so horribly wrong?
I left South Africa on Saturday and the England team were not far behind me following their performance against Germany on Sunday – it was very, very poor.
My commentating stint in South Africa ended on Saturday and it was great to be home with my wife and kids – three weeks had felt like a long stint away from home but I loved every minute it of it out in South Africa.
I felt privileged to be at the World Cup commentating for the BBC and experiencing everything that is brilliant about football and the way that it pulls so many people together.
Unfortunately for England fans Fabio wasn’t able to bring the England team together quite as well!
Players like Gerrard, Rooney and Lampard have been superb in the Premier League but they just didn’t produce on the world stage.
Was it the system? Were they fit? Did they have enough licence to roam?
All questions that will be flying round and round in their heads for a good few weeks yet I imagine.
You know deep down when you have been at fault and had a bad game and it eats at you. I am always desperate to get back out on the pitch and put things right when I have had a bad game and I am sure these lads will be the same.
Lampard’s goal that wasn’t may well have changed the game but they way England defended they should have been four goals down at that point.
It is time for FIFA to look at goal line technology but that shouldn’t and won’t maska poor England campaign.
So both mine and England’s World Cup is over, I know who enjoyed theirs most, back to pre season training this week and can’t wait to get back in the dressing room for some banter with the Derby boys.
We have had a good break and it will be good to catch up with them again – having been at altitude in South Africa I hope my lungs hold out in the fitness testing!!
Bring on Leeds away first game of the season!!
