Nike were kind enough to send us a pair of the new Nike Mercurial Superfly II to let us review and pass on some feedback. So, armed with brand new, £275 Violet football boots, Greg and Graeme from the ACA Sports team headed to their mid-week games ready to review… and explain to their team mates why they had purple football boots!
First, here is Greg’s review of the Nike Mercurial Superfly II
“Well, I wore the Nike Mercurial Superfly last night and was pretty impressed with a few things! They are exceptionally light, more so than I had expected, and the new sole/stud design does a great job on firm ground surfaces.
The Flywire system really helps to make sure the boot is snug around the foot and despite their thin design, they are more supportive than many thicker and heavier boots. The boots also deliver when it comes to touch, as they feel a lot more direct than boots with more/thicker materials.
A slight downside which might affect anyone wearing them this summer is that they have less sole cushioning than the Vapor VI, which could cause a little discomfort on parks that aren’t looked after as well as thos Walcott and Drogba play on.
Overall though, the boots are clearly packed with technology which helps to make them one of the most advanced on the market and these or the Vapor VI would make a great purchase for anyone looking for speed, touch and striking design. I look forward to seeing them in black!!!”
Graeme’s opinions were quite similar, after he wore them a couple of days later.
Graeme’s Superfly II Review
“I was wearing the new Nike Mercurial Superfly on Saturday, the first thing that you notice is the striking design of the boot that from first reaction in the changing room clearly isn’t to everyone’s taste. The second is how light the Mercurial Superfly actually is!
The new stud design is really effective on the firm ground, luckily the park on Saturday was in good condition so I never really had the problems that Greg had from the Thursday but it clear on a bad pitch they would be quite uncomfortable.
One surprise with the Mercurial Superfly is just how much grip the instep of the boot has when in contact with the ball, adding to the great feel these boots already provide.
One slight down point to the boots on Saturday is due to the Flywire system in the boot that works well through the side of the boot, but at the back, the lack of flexibility caused a bit of rubbing against the ankle. This though, is probably down to the fact that these are new boots and will wear in.
Overall the Nike Mercurial Superfly are fantastic football boots that would make a great buy for any footballer looking for a lightweight boot with great feel when on the ball.”
The feeling from both reviews is that the boots impressed, although perhaps they won’t suit normal amateur footballers. The soles and lightweight design are superb on a good pitch, but they can be far and few between. As for the colour, that’s an individual thing, but Violet is a little hard to get used to!
